THE PROCESS

Framing of 'artwork' or any Item has a number of important processes. The first job is to house the 'artwork' so that it is protected from a number of hazards. The second is to present the 'artwork' at its best taking into consideration your tastes and style.

Every item of 'artwork' is unique as is every client of Picture Framing on Wises, and therefore requires individual treatment.

Custom framing does not imply “Way-out” or “Over the Top” framing, but rather individual appropriate tasteful designs.

Good framing protects artworks from damage and it enhances the aesthetic quality of the art in the frame. It should draw a viewer’s eye to the 'artwork', but not detract from it. The materials used in framing, appropriate design and correct framing techniques play an important role in protecting and enhancing the 'artwork' on display.

In good framing, artefacts and 'artworks' are not altered in any way and are attached in such a way that they can be removed from the frame without any damage to the items.

Mat enhancement can take many forms. These include double and even triple mat’s, different cutting methods such as reverse bevel, different textured mat for example linen or suede, bevelled accents to add depth, even small “frames” called fillets. The range of mat enhancement is extremely large. Using our unique selection process, which by the way is guaranteed in writing, you will see the huge difference the mat forms will make to your 'artwork'. Light and other environmental factors such as humidity and pollution can be a threat to 'artworks' and valuable items, resulting in their rapid deterioration. At Picture Framing on Wises we only use materials and techniques which will preserve and protect your items for many years.

Picture Framing on Wises framing includes:

  • applying reversible mounting methods and materials
  • applying support to the artwork which allows natural expansion
  • the use of conservation quality materials
  • using UV filtered glazing
  • sealing the back of the framed work to reduce the effects of temperature and humidity changes

Light and Art
Light is essential to view 'artworks' but at the same time it is probably the most destructive environmental element causing damage to 'artworks'. Light is composed of wavelengths, both visible and invisible. The wavelengths which are visible to the eye are the ones which form colours. Although these rays can be harmful, the most destructive rays are the invisible UV rays.

Light, particularly UV light, causes paper to embrittle and to discolour and it can cause fading of design materials such as dyes and pigments in paints, pastels, crayons and inks.

Because light is so damaging to art and items Picture Framing on Wises use glazing products which are able to filter up to 98% of the UV light. Glazing with UV filtering properties comes in the forms of glass and acrylic.

The use of UV filtered glazing helps considerably in protecting 'artworks' from deterioration and fading but it does not completely prevent the process of deterioration - it merely slows it.

How do I choose quality Picture Framing?
What to look for when choosing your framer

  • Experience - is one of the most critical elements of quality picture framing
  • Knowledge - comes with experience, the 'know how' of how to correctly treat each piece of work. The ability to recognise the medium, age and appropriate treatment for each piece of work.
  • Design flair - the whole industry is a visual one. The end product must be visually appealing to your unique tastes.
  • Expert craftsmanship - perfect corners, mats cut precisely, clean glass, all correct materials used.
  • Reliability - Ensure that what is promised, is delivered and on time.
  • Look around - observe the standard of work on display in the store, the creativity and quality of the pieces on their walls.

Whether it's a matter of choosing a frame, conserving an 'artwork' or something a little quirky; our framing consultants will use their knowledge of conservation, aesthetics and colour selection to help you make the best choice for your precious piece.

What should I consider when choosing my picture frame?
The room's décor should always be considered, but not so much that you sacrifice what complements the 'artwork'. Remember, the frame should always enhance the 'artwork'.

The place your picture will hang is very relevant to the colours used, the treatment recommended (glass type etc) and the overall style of the framing.

Consider using a mat board as a border that surrounds your art within the frame. It is more than just a pretty colour; the purpose of matting is both cosmetic and protective.

Mat boards are used to draw the eye and bring out the colours in an image. There are many creative and elegant techniques that can be used, to add distinction to your framed piece. The addition of mat boards can mean the difference between an insignificant piece that gets lost on a wall and a dramatic one that serves as a perfect accent for a room.

Mat boards can also serve to highlight a colour, accent a shape or increase the overall size of the framed piece. Colour plays an important role in this transformation process. For example, using a light mat has the effect of lightening and enlarging the 'artwork', while using a dark mat serves to darken and shrink the image.
